Setting Boundaries how to say “no”

Boundaries are the rules and limits people set for themselves in relationships. Someone with healthy boundaries can say “no,” but they’re also open to intimacy and close relationships.

Our Setting Boundaries worksheet helps clients set healthier boundaries by encouraging them to reflect on several key areas, including:

  • why boundaries are important
  • ways to say “no” to things
  • how to set boundaries effectively, but respectfully

The worksheet also includes a practice-based section that asks clients to share the exact language they would use to communicate a boundary in a variety of scenarios.

Use this worksheet with clients who could benefit from setting healthier boundaries in their relationships. This includes clients who haven’t reflected enough on their boundaries or who struggle with people-pleasing, peer pressure, tolerating disagreement, or asserting their needs.

Consider role-playing with clients how they would communicate their boundaries in the situations that challenge them most.
