STRATUM

Stratum is named for the series of layers found on the beds of sedimentary rock formations. By asking various people (who have been featured on The Iceberg) a common set of questions, and then collecting their answers in a list, readers can learn and compare the things that make up people’s layers. And hopefully sharing these layers helps to bring to the surface some truth and essence.

Name one thing you always bring when you’re traveling.
Julie Lavelle: A camera. (Or two, or three)

What did you collect as a kid?
Julie Lavelle: Over the years I went through many phases but the ones I really loved the most were definitely Barbies (I had tons!), marbles (remember how awesome they used to be?) and Pogs (Loved them…what a weird fad).
Carly Waito: Rocks, shells, marbles… all kinds of tiny things.
Sara Söderholm: Pictures of NKOTB.
Michael Muller: Baseball cards. I loved comparing statistics on the backs of cards as well as seeing where every player was born. I was and still am somewhat obsessed with the sport.

Jamison of Teen Daze: Hockey cards.
Melinda Josie: Sandylion stickers in a collector’s sticker book.

Mitch Fillion: Anything Patrick Roy.
Amy (The Untucked): Golden Books.
Aldrin Taroy: Bottle caps.
Describe your first crush.
Julie Lavelle: To be honest, I think it was Zac Hanson. His girlish looks and high pitched vocals made me swoon. But let’s not lie, Hanson are still on my iTunes rotation, and they are some very talented men now!
Carly Waito: His name was Daniel. He had dreamy dark brown eyes. I was totally smitten with him all through elementary school until he moved to the other side of town and to a different school after grade 6. I didn’t see him again until we were 17 when both happened to be in Italy on a trip organized by our two high schools. We reconnected on a water taxi to Venice. It was pretty surreal. I also had a weird crush on David Bowie in Labyrinth.
Sara Söderholm: His name was Andreas and we got married by the rain coats in preschool. He brought me tulips on my fifth birthday and impressed/disgussed everyone by swallowing dried worms found in the playground.
Michael Muller: We met at a summer camp on the last night at the big dance. We slow danced two times and then held hands all the way back to the cabins – the whole time never once uttering a single word to each other. I didn’t even know her name and the next day we got picked up by our respective parents never to meet again. We were 8.
Aaron Levin: Her name was Melanie Bradshaw. That’s about all I remember.
Jamison of Teen Daze: A girl that was like six years older than me.
Melinda Josie: I had a crush on one of my school friends from kindergarten until about grade 5. He grew up not far from me, and came to my birthday parties. I think I mostly had a crush because he was nicer to me than the other boys. I tried to ask him to be my boyfriend on a class camping trip, but he said no. I was pretty sad, and we grew apart a little, but we’d become friends again in later grade school; I forgot my crush and moved on. We both grew up in Huntsville, but we both moved down to Toronto years after high school. I still see him around the city sometimes.
Jessica Lewis: Short, brown hair, big nose.
Martín Canova: I think it was a girl in my school when I was in 5 years-old when my family and I were living in Buenos Aires. I only remenber that she was blonde.
Alex Hudson: Her name was Carolyn. We were the best drawers in my grade 4 class. Years later, I ended up sitting next to her at high school graduation.
Anabela Carneiro: The very first one I remember having was on Robin, of Batman and Robin. And yes, the cartoon version of Robin. Oh dear.
Trevor Powers: I was about 6. My best friend had the same crush so we fought over her.
Catherine Huizenga: His name was Karl. I was 12 and devastated when he moved back to Australia. He always had an athletic red flush on his cheeks and he was the only boy in school who wore shoes instead of sneakers. We never actually spoke…
Sarah Nicole Prickett: First serious one was the pastor’s son. He was tall, dark, hot, aware of it, a jerk. He wasn’t interested. Later I would realize he wasn’t in the least interesting, either. But I’ve never had what you might call impeccable taste.
Stephanie Madewell: I was eight and he was too – his name was Eric and he pretended to play chess with me every day at recess. Neither of us knew what we were doing.
Jeffrey Brown: The new girl at school, long blond hair and super nice.
Hila Shachar: He was my best friend. He was tall, lanky and smart.
Lisa Howard: He was the boy next door. We both loved mint chip ice cream.
Mitch Fillion: A lioness among the hyenas.
Amy (The Untucked): The boy across the street, who defended my honor vs. a Hot Wheels-stomping bully.
Aldrin Taroy: We were in grade 2 and she had a doll face and short black hair.
Name one song that makes you cry.
Julie Lavelle: Bon Iver – Re: Stacks.
Carly Waito: Several of my brother’s songs (Adam and the Amethysts) get me teary, although most of them aren’t sad, just very personal and evocative. There’s this one line: “Imagine someone you love. Now imagine them gone,” that kind of stabs me in the heart every time I hear it, especially hearing it sung by my brother’s voice.
Sara Söderholm: Holes by Mercury Rev.
Michael Muller: Goldmund’s “Threnody”. This song I believe is my most listened to track of my whole life. I listened to it on repeat for a whole day once. There is something so horrific and sad about it and at the same time, calming and hopeful. There are a couple other songs by Goldmund that cast a serene gauze over me such as “Brown Creek” and “Hope Avenue”. It’s restorative music.
Aaron Levin: Fraser & Debolt – “Waltz of the Tennis Players”.
Jamison of Teen Daze: “Like The Wheel” by The Tallest Man On Earth.
Melinda Josie: Hmm, pretty much anything by the Smiths.
Jessica Lewis: Junip – “In Every Direction” gets me close to there.
Martín Canova: Brian Wilson – “Surf’s Up”
Alex Hudson: I once cried to R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.” Not my finest moment.
Anabela Carneiro: Probably my favourite song from childhood, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns n’ Roses. To me it sounds like being 12 in summertime, a feeling which is usually so long lost but which I can recall by listening to that song.
Trevor Powers: A Grave with No Name – “Streams”.
Catherine Huizenga: Anything sung in church or by small children gets me real good, not one specific song though.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”.
Stephanie Madewell: Ravel’s “Pavane pour une infante défunte” makes me blissfully melancholy.
Jeffrey Brown: Magnolia Electric Co. – “It’s Made Me Cry”.
Hila Shachar: “The Big Prince” by David Broza. It reminds me of Israel and my childhood.
Lisa Howard: Chicago – “Colour My World”
Mitch Fillion: Barzin – “Look What Love Has Turned Us Into”.
Amy (The Untucked): “From the River to the Ocean” by Bill Callahan
Aldrin Taroy: Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable”. I woke up one morning and I thought my grandmother had abandoned me. This song was playing.
Who is your favourite film character?
Julie Lavelle: This is a tough call, but I’m going with two: Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) in Amélie and Kate (Zooey Deschanel) in The Go-Getter.
Carly Waito: Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester – I really loved Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender’s recent interpretations.
Sara Söderholm: All the weirdos in Roy Andersson’s films.
Michael Muller: I suppose Bill Murray. None of his roles are forgettable. He’s just so good in everything he’s in.
Aaron Levin: Vasquez in Aliens. Or Hudson. Or Hicks. Pretty much the entire cast sans Paul Reiser.
Jamison of Teen Daze: Han Solo.
Melinda Josie: It may be a little cliche for a female in my age group, but I would say Amelie. I think she’s pretty magical! I also always loved Severus Snape.
Jessica Lewis: I could say William Miller in Almost Famous.
Martín Canova: Dirty Harry.
Alex Hudson: Alaistar Sim playing Scrooge. The last 15 minutes.
Anabela Carneiro: Today I’ll go with J.J. “Jake” Gittes from Chinatown as played by Jack Nicholson. Sleuth it out, Jake!
Trevor Powers: Dewey Finn.
Catherine Huizenga: Sam Lowry in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. I’m not sure this is an intellectual response.
Stephanie Madewell: Veronica Sawyer, Heathers (1989).
Jeffrey Brown: Yoda.
Hila Shachar: Weronika from Krzysztof Kieslowski’s La double vie de Véronique (1991).
Lisa Howard: Veda, My Girl
Mitch Fillion: Barry Lyndon.
Amy (The Untucked): Nick and Nora Charles (they can’t be divided into one character, sorry)
Aldrin Taroy: Indiana Jones.
Who is your favourite character from a novel?
Carly Waito: Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester (again) and Leo Gursky from The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. Also, I’m hooked on Nordic mystery novels and some of the detective characters are really great. I think Inspector Konrad Sejer in Karin Fossum’s books is my current favourite.
Sara Söderholm: The doctor in Doktor Glas by Hjalmar Söderberg.
Michael Muller: I really like Cormac McCarthy and am currently re-reading the Border Trilogy. John Grady Cole is a true hero and romantic in every sense. He’s perhaps what I’d one day long to embody in his determination and righteousness.
Aaron Levin: Henry Dorset Case from Neuromancer.
Jamison of Teen Daze: Holden Caulfield.
Melinda Josie: I re-read On Beauty recently, and Kiki Belsey is an incredible character. She made that story.
Jessica Lewis: I could say Dimple Lala from Born Confused.
Martín Canova: John Wainwright of Olaf Stapledon’s Odd John.
Alex Hudson: Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice.
Anabela Carneiro: All the characters collectively known as “The Hons” in Nancy Mitford’s books. They are hilarious.
Trevor Powers: Moby Dick.
Catherine Huizenga: Priscilla in Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: Catherine. Wuthering Heights. She wasn’t a ‘strong female character,’ but neither am I.
Stephanie Madewell: I can’t choose just one, so here’s two: Larry Darrell from The Razor’s Edge and Dorothea Brooke from Middlemarch.
Jeffrey Brown: The son from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.
Hila Shachar: Catherine from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847). Everybody seems to loath her, but I like her willfulness.
Mitch Fillion: Don Quixote.
Amy (The Untucked): Hoshino from Kafka on the Shore
Aldrin Taroy: May Kasahara from Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
Name one guilty pleasure.
Julie Lavelle: I rarely feel guilty about it but I definitely enjoy a nice cheesy, romantic comedy once in a while. There is nothing wrong with a feel good movie!
Carly Waito: Kraft Dinner.
Sara Söderholm: Films starring Keira Knightley.
Michael Muller: I can pretty easily get sucked into watching full seasons of sub-mediocre television programs which I will not name here.
Aaron Levin: Web development.
Jamison of Teen Daze: Nutella.
Melinda Josie: Donuts. Definitely donuts. I’ve been really hooked on the homemade ones available on Saturdays at Lost & Found on Dundas. It’s a clothing shop, but they sell (amazing) coffee and sweets as well.
Jessica Lewis: Falling asleep with a TV show on.
Martín Canova: I don’t feel guilt in any of my pleasures.
Alex Hudson: Mantracker.
Anabela Carneiro: Giant bowls of ice cream. I usually feel rotten afterwards.
Trevor Powers: The Office. Only it’s more of just a pleasure. Sometimes I feel guilty after watching 6 hours of it straight.
Catherine Huizenga: Good vanilla ice cream with Hersheys chocolate sauce.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: I hate this question, premise-wise. Drugs? Refined sugar?
Stephanie Madewell: Watching movies with big explosions while eating extremely buttery popcorn.
Jeffrey Brown: Reading Warhammer 40,000 science fiction novels.
Hila Shachar: I drink a ridiculous amount of coffee a day.
Lisa Howard: Expensive Cheese and Wine
Amy (The Untucked): Tumblr.
Aldrin Taroy: Degrassi.
What’s your favourite painting?
Julie Lavelle: I have a few but I especially like these: Van Gogh – Starry Night and Magritte – The False Mirror.
Carly Waito: It’s impossible to pick just one, but I adore Andrew Wyeth.
Sara Söderholm: I love everything by Pierre Mornet.
Michael Muller: Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth. It is truly a very sobering story behind the painting but the colors and composition are just lovely to me (worth reading the backstory here).
Aaron Levin: The Wyrd painting Thomas Gaudin of the Wicked Awesomes! made me.
Jamison of Teen Daze: The Wedding at Cana. This one completely destroyed me when I was visiting the Louvre (it hangs directly across from the lacklustre Mona Lisa).
Melinda Josie: Oh, that’s such a hard question! I would say one of my favorite paintings of all time is Young Hare by Albrecht Durer. That man knew how to paint fur!
Martín Canova: Balthus’s Guitar Lesson.
Alex Hudson: Starry Night by Van Gogh.
Anabela Carneiro: Any number of Dutch floral painting from the seventeenth century, beautiful blooms against a heavy, dark background.
Catherine Huizenga: The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch Still makes me woozy.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: Just got a tattoo of Wilder Shores of Love from Cy Twombly’s painting of the same name, so I should probably say that.
Stephanie Madewell: Michael Andrews: Melanie and Me Swimming, (1978-1979).
Jeffrey Brown: The Mérode Altarpiece by Robert Campin.
Hila Shachar: Snow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth by J. M. W. Turner. It’s a living, breathing image.
Lisa Howard: La Classe de Danse – Edgar Degas
Mitch Fillion: Van Gogh’s Chair.
Amy (The Untucked): The Gleaners by Jean-François Millet.
Aldrin Taroy: St. Matthew by Frans Hals.
What are you scared of?
Julie Lavelle: Quite a few things but mainly vomit and spiders.
Carly Waito: Failure. And barfing.
Sara Söderholm: Pain.
Michael Muller: Any sort of bigger fish in the ocean. I’ve never seen a shark in person but I have seen a barracuda once while snorkeling. It was paralyzing. I think what freaks me out the most is not being able to move or swim or defend quick enough in the water. It’s an awful thought, especially mixed with how big an ocean is and how many crazy and scary things are lurking there beneath the surface.
Aaron Levin: Insects.
Jamison of Teen Daze: Bees.
Melinda Josie: Spiders!
Jessica Lewis: Bodies of water where I can’t see the bottom.
Martín Canova: The evilness inside every human being.
Alex Hudson: Street magicians.
Anabela Carneiro: I can’t read books with post-apocalyptic settings. The idea of no fresh water and whatnot is more terrifying to me than anything else.
Trevor Powers: Losing myself.
Catherine Huizenga: Screw scared.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: Dying. Like everybody.
Stephanie Madewell: Dementia.
Jeffrey Brown: Dying.
Hila Shachar: Ignorance.
Lisa Howard: Darkness
Mitch Fillion: Chemicals.
Amy (The Untucked): Losing my mental faculties.
Aldrin Taroy: Praying mantises.
What is your ideal breakfast?
Julie Lavelle: I love a good brunch – so probably a combination plate of waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and fruit, with a nice hot cup of tea on the side.
Carly Waito: I love something savoury with good coffee. One of my favourite breakfasts is ‘le brunch’ from La Croissanterie Figaro in Montreal: crepes filled with egg, ham and cheese and baked until the outside is a bit crispy and the cheese is melty, with a little maple syrup on top, with fruit and an incredible croissant on the side, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee.
Sara Söderholm: Coffee with milk + tons of croissants.
Michael Muller: I am an enormous proponent of Mexican breakfasts having spent most of my life in Texas. Good breakfast tacos paired with some strong coffee cross through my kitchen more mornings than not. Eggs, avocado and salsa w/ sauteed onions and peppers wrapped in warm tortillas – cannot be beat!
Aaron Levin: Smoovie.
Jamison of Teen Daze: My girlfriend makes the greatest breakfast: “HASH”, which is comprised of hashbrowns, green and red peppers, bacon, scrambled eggs, green onions, covered in garlic and seasoning salt. It is the greatest.
Melinda Josie: Good coffee, a good pastry, (preferably a croissant), and a nice big fruit salad with lots of berries in it. That sounds pretty perfect to me.
Jessica Lewis: Brunch. Either the bacon, eggs, toast and potatoes route or the sweet fruity pancakes persuasion. Oh and lots and lots of coffee.
Martín Canova: Mmm, that’s an imaginary question because I always wake up at midday, but coffee, dulce de leche toast, orange juice, jam and cheese.
Alex Hudson: Egg on a bagel with cheddar cheese and an Yves veggie patty.
Anabela Carneiro: Now that it’s summer I don’t have much of an appetite so a light berry-based smoothie is just the thing.
Trevor Powers: The “country fried breakfast” at Cracker Barrel with the lady.
Catherine Huizenga: Bacon and butter on homemade sour dough bread with fresh fruit and Earl Grey tea please.
Sarah Nicole Prickett: Good toast, nutella, bananas. Eggs, separately. Salt.
Stephanie Madewell: A ripe peach.
Jeffrey Brown: French toast. No, wait, blueberry pancakes. No, french toast.
Hila Shachar: Late on a Sunday morning, sitting in the garden with a cup of coffee, pancakes, honey, cream and butter.
Lisa Howard: Coffee and scones with cream and jam.
Mitch Fillion: Organic omelet, sliced tomato from mom’s garden and Pau D’arco tea.
Amy (The Untucked): A perfectly poached egg on buttered whole grain toast, salt & pepper, peameal bacon, avocado with lemon, strong black coffee.
Aldrin Taroy: Two fried eggs, bacon, chocolate challah bread with margarine, sliced up orange and a good cup of coffee (black).
