A Song & A Memory: Mark Andrade September 12, 2011

A song is a key for locked memory boxes. A song can transport you back through time, giving you a chance to relive moments and ideas that occurred back when you first heard that song. A song is not just a song; it is also a story.

Built To Spill – “Twin Falls”

Built to Spill’s “Twin Falls” still stirs me up inside when I hear it. I was graduating from high school, and me and my friends were having one last weekend of togetherness before some of us were headed off to university.

I was dating a lovely girl at the time and most of my best friends were with me up in northern Ontario. I had to leave a day early from this wonderful cottage weekend, so I said my goodbyes early in the morning (at that time it felt like a ‘forever goodbye’). I got in my car and Doug Martsch’s melding guitar riffs and honest vocals filled my ears. I became pretty choked up as I saw my friends waving at me in my rear view mirror.

To this day, I still listen to “Twin Falls” and it evokes this strange, yet familiar sensation. A deep feeling of nostalgia from a song that looks back on those foggy memories we love to remember, and sometimes the ones we might want to forget.
