A Song & A Memory: Allie Hughes September 02, 2011

A song is a key for locked memory boxes. A song can transport you back through time, giving you a chance to relive moments and ideas that occurred back when you first heard that song. A song is not just a song; it is also a story.

Lisa Stansfield – “All Around The World”

OK so this is harder than I would have thought. I’ll go with one of my first memories of music. I can’t remember what age I was, but it was an age where I found myself in the back of the car running errands with my mom a lot of the time. Grocery shopping, banking, haircuts – that sort of thing.

The radio was on in the car and the song “All around the World” by Lisa Stansfield came on and it was the first time I remember feeling emotionally connected to a song. The song in fact moved me to tears. I really thought that when she sang “been around the world and I- eyeyeyeye I can’t find my baby” that she was singing about her own baby, her child, that she had lost? Or had been stolen? The whole thing was so sad to me… I’m listening to it now as I write this and it totally reminds me of driving around Burlington and looking outside the window as it rained… Was I in a car seat? I don’t remember. I remember wanting to go home and watch a movie and have macaroni and cheese though. I’m also struck right now by the cool string arrangement. I don’t think I noticed that back then.
