Mjölk August 14, 2011

Nomenclature is the manner in which names are assigned. We collect names and titles and then we reveal the story behind that name.

Mjölk, pronounced “Mi-yelk” or Mi-yulk” depending on which region of Scandinavia you’re in means milk in Swedish. Milk is natural, pure, and essential, the same descriptive words that can be used to describe the products we carry in the store. Milk is also with you all of your life, it’s nutrition when you are born and it provides you with calcium when you’re old–it has a very humanistic quality. It is this humanism that is so connected to Scandinavian design, designs that are simple and pared down to the essential forms with no unnecessary decoration. It also has that same longevity, pieces that you can have with you all of your life, that remain to be useful and relevant.

The inspiration to use the Swedish written Mjölk is from the beautiful milk packaging we saw while traveling through Sweden, specifically the Arla milk container which features a red cow and modernist red bars stemming from the bottom to the middle of the carton. That image stayed with us all the way home, and when we decided to open the store we couldn’t imagine anything more perfect than Mjölk.
