A Song & A Memory: Jonas Bonnetta July 16, 2011

A song is a key for locked memory boxes. A song can transport you back through time, giving you a chance to relive moments and ideas that occurred back when you first heard that song. A song is not just a song; it is also a story.

Michael Hurley – “Sweedeedee”

First heard this track on a rainy day in the mountains. Maybe southern Oregon or northern California, can’t remember. We stopped at some little shop in the mountainside and bought a case of Natural Ice to deal with the long drive to L.A. This song came on someone’s iPod as we were rolling through the hills. Rain on the windshield and warm and dry in the van. Dark, stormy day. Sitting in the back of the van sipping a brew. I had never heard of Michael Hurley before and it opened me up to this amazing catalogue of folk songs that I’ve since obsessed over. So many amazing songs. Every time I hear “Sweedeedee” now I’m transported back to that day. With good friends, rolling through the big hills in the rain. It’s a perfect match.
